FishFlix.com: My Son My Savior (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

In today's entertainment world, it's very hard to find a family friendly movie that is appropriate for all ages that doesn't contain questionable materials.  There are so many movies that have great premises but contain unneeded sex scenes or profanity that do not contribute to the movie content at all but just seem to be there because society says it should be.

The Birth of Jesus - My Son, My Savior
Luckily there are companies like FishFlix.com who sell movies that either have this type of content removed or never had questionable content to begin with.  I had the opportunity to review the movie My Son, My Savior  on DVD in time for Easter and it was a wonderful viewing experience for the entire family.

About FishFlix

FishFlix.com is an online retailer who specializes in Christian and Inspirational movies. Their goal isto provide quality Christian entertainment that can be watched by families without the worries of questionable content or ideas/beliefs that disagree with those who follow Christ.  The company was started over a decade ago by Turkish Christian Dr. Enis Sakirgil who original wanted Christians in the West to know about the Biblical histories of Turkey. Since those origins,FishFlix.com has evolved into selling more mainstream Christian movies.

About My Son, My Savior

When we think about the ministry of Jesus, most people do not give much thought about Mary after the Christmas story.  Yet throughout history, only Mary had the privilege to call Jesus her son. She probably grew up hearing of the coming Messiah, learning the Old Testament prophecies that spoke of him and how he would deliver them from sin.  Then she had to watch him make the ultimate sacrifice as he gave his life on the cross for the sins of mankind.

My Son, My Savior is a 42 minute feature film released in 2015 that portrays the life of Mary from the visitation of the angel announcing the coming Messiah to the crucifixion and her point of view of being the mother of Jesus.  Written by Janis Lonnquist and directed by Steve Boettcher, My Son My Savior  stars Corrina Crade as Mary,   Neil Vanides as the apostle John, and Bruce Marchiano as Jesus.

A great tool for small group studies and church groups, the purchase of the DVD also comes with access to a 4 session bible study and small group study guide that can be downloaded from a website.

What We Thought

Christian or Inspirational Movies are always a hit or a miss as far as quality. Unfortunately, in the past, it has not been a popular genre of movies and so many titles are DVD release only and never see theater time.  This also means many of these titles are very low budget with grainy filming and bad scripting.

Bruce Marchiano's protrayal of Jesus
Luckily, with the recently popularity of Inspirational genre lately, more quality movies are being made.  My Son, My Savior falls in somewhere in between.  While most of the acting cast were unknown to me, I was very familiar with Bruce Marchiano who has portrayed Jesus in many other files such as "The Encounter" and "Apostle Peter and the Last Supper".   I really enjoy Marchiano's portrayals of Jesus as he has a demeanor and a kindness to his eyes that one can only imagine would be much the same that our Lord would have also had.

The settings are beautiful and one can one travel back to ancient Bethlehem and Jerusalem and imaging walking where Jesus walked or feel like one is watching the Savior as he teaches.

While this movie does depict the Crucifixion, it is not nearly as graphic to watch as other movies. Some Biblical truths are left out, such as the striking of the sun, the ripping of the veil and the destruction of the temple, but the focus of this movie is more about Mary's heartbreak then it is about the crucifixion.

With the additional material such as the downloadable Bible study and Small Group Study guides, this movie is perfect for both a family worship study or in a church setting.   I would also recommend it just for a casual watch with the family when wanting something that is not as heartbreaking as "The Passion of the Christ" but still able to remind us of his sacrifice.

When Calls The Heart - FishFlix.com ( A Schoolhouse Crew Review )

We love movie night in our house.  We often have two different types of movie nights however - one for animated kid movies for Ash and Garrett to enjoy and then we also have a movie night with Alyssa that involves a movie that doesn't have animated animals.  When choosing movies to watch with Alyssa (who is 16) we always try to be mindful to how much adult themes the movie may have as she is easily embarrassed by any sexual overtones the movie selection might have.  Because of this, when we were recently given the opportunity to review When Calls the Heart, Heart of the Family on DVD from FishFlix.com, we were pretty excited since we were very familiar with the show and knew it was something Alyssa would enjoy watching.

About When Calls the Heart

When Calls the Heart is a tv series that airs on the Hallmark channel.  Based upon the book of the same name from Janette Oke, this successful series focuses on Elizabeth Thatcher, a young woman from a very affluent family who travels to a very small town known as Hope Valley (previously known as Coal Valley) to become a teacher.  Now in it's third season (which will begin this winter), the show follows Elizabeth as she adapts from being a city girl to small town living, her friendship with widowed Abigail Stanton, and her budding relationship with Canadian Mountie Constable Jack Thornton. It is considered a faith based drama with strong female role models and while it does have romance and more mature themes, they are presented in such a way as to not be glaring the watcher in the face.  The show has a huge viewing audience with many loyal fans who are known as "Hearties" who connect via facebook and twitter to talk about their favorite show.

Abigail (Lor Loughlin), Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and Jack (Daniel Lissing)

The DVD

Last year, Alyssa and I both became familiar with the series and fell in love with the characters. This particular DVD that we reviewed was When Calls the Heart, Heart of the Family.  This particular DVD is the 2 hour special that aired on Hallmark during Season 2, which I had already watched previously on Hallmark but that Alyssa had not seen yet.  The story for this episode that Elizabeth has returned to Hope Valley after an extended visit with her family and volunteers to watch a neighbor's two children and his homestead while he goes to help his brother.  Elizabeth, being a city girl who is somewhat domestically challenged, doesn't have the first clue as to what is involved in running a homestead and some hilarious moments ensue. Luckily, Mountie hero Jack shows up to help.  This episode also focuses on the strained relationship between Abigail and Bill Avery, another Mountie who is in town investigating a counterfeit operation.

Jack and Elizabeth
Since we were already familiar with the show and the current storylines, it was very easy for us to pop the DVD into the player and watch it together. Alyssa absolutely loves Jack (who oddly, looks a lot like my ex husband.. lol)  and I enjoy knowing that there's nothing I need to tell her to "cover her eyes" for.  The budding romance between the two is very sweet and also makes for a great example of how men should treat women in a relationship.  I also would say that while there's nothing that lil eyes shouldn't see, the story lines are probably over their heads making this a show better for pre-teens and up.

While I wouldn't recommend this particular DVD for anyone unfamiliar with the show, FishFlix.com does sell both the full 12 episode Series 1 and Series 2 DVD sets on their webpage. With a current pricetag of only 10 dollars for the 3 DVD Volume 1 6 episode set, I would highly recommend anyone who's interested in the show to pick up this steal.

Unbroken: Legacy of Faith Edition From FishFlix.com (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

Unbroken1

I was recently given the opportunity to watch and review the  Legacy of Faith Edition of Unbroken on DVD currently being sold by FishFlix.com. I knew this would be a review I wanted to be involved in.

On December 10th, 2012, Edwards Air Force Base had a very special visitor. The 95-year-old World War II aviator and American hero, Louis Zamperini, as well as his son Luke, arrived on base to give a very
U.S. Air Force photo by Edward Cannon
motivating speech to the men and women stationed here.  As he sat in a comfy leather chair on the stage of the base theater, he spoke of his career as a skilled runner and of 1936 Berlin Olympics and attracting the attention of Adolf Hitler (and of stealing a Nazi flag as a souvenir while there). He spoke of the 1943 mission where his B-24 went down in the Pacific Ocean killing 8 of 11 of the crew members. He spoke of the 47 of drifting more than 1,000 nautical miles, losing one of his fellow crash survivors, only to be captured by the Japanese Navy where he then became a Prisoner of War for 30 months. He spoke of the nightmares he had following his release and how his wife and Billy Graham led him to the faith that would ease his heart and those nightmares forever.  In speaking to the men and women of Edwards, Mr. Zamperini was the light on the lampstand, the Salt and Light to all those who could hear him. One of those men was my husband, who was inspired by what Mr. Zamperini had to say that day.  It was one of the last appearances that Louis Zamperini made – he passed away less than 6 months later.

When Angelina Jolie decided to produce the movie Unbroken, which is about the life of Mr Zamperini, I knew I was going to have very mixed feelings about it. Big Hollywood does absolutely no justice to any topics involving faith and God (ie: Noah).  While Unbroken is an amazing movie, many found it upsetting that Mr. Zamperini’s faith was basically hidden under a bushel. Hollywood would have you believe people don’t want to hear about stories of faith, they just want the exciting parts. But his faith in God was a huge part of who Mr. Zamperini was.  Thankfully, FishFlix.com sells this movie as “The Legacy of Faith Edition” – the original Hollywood production with an additional 90 minute DVD that tells the rest of the story.

For those unfamiliar with FishFlix, they are an online retailer for Christian and Inspirational movies.  FishFlix's goal is to provide quality Christian entertainment that can be watched by families without being worried about questionable content or ideas/beliefs that disagree with those who follow Christ. The company was started over a decade ago by Turkish Christian Dr. Enis Sakirgil who originally wanted Christians in the West to know about the Biblical histories of Turkey.  Since that time, FishFlix has evolved into selling more mainstream Christian movies.

One of the first things I did notice was on the cover of the DVD was a notice that said "This edited version contains material different from the original theatrical version" and that this particular version was Not-Rated. After reading some information on Commonsensemedia.com , I noted that the original version was rated PG-13 and had some mild profanity. I then sent an email to FishFlix.com, asking if they knew the difference between the two.  A very friendly reply was received in a timely manner letting me know that ", but found that some of the words had been silenced and the bare buttocks scene had been blurred." I found FishFlix.com's customer service to be quick and friendly in regards to my question and did not feel as if my email as a bother to them.

While I don't want to give away any details of this movie and spoil it, I will say that this is an amazing movie and should not be skipped.    A large portion of the movie takes place in a Japanese POW camp and shows images of torture - this might be something to consider if letting your children view it and earlier scenes show the killing and mutilation of a shark and albatross.  I would say that it is appropriate for viewing by a mature 13 year old or older.  I watched it with my 15 year old daughter and was comfortable with her watching it and felt she took a lot away from the viewing.

The 90 minute Legacy video is the real gem to this package.  The interview of Pastor Greg Laurie with  Louie Zamperini will leave you in stitches. Well advanced in his years at the time of the interview (and my husband pointed out was wearing the same windbreaker and hat as when he saw him), you can tell Mr. Zamperini was still very sharp and spry.  Hearing this story in his own words is amazing and I was glad to get to hear it - while not quite as neat as my husband hearing it first hand, this was still a real treat..

On that day in December, once Louis Zamperini was finished inspiring those who had the wonderful opportunity to hear him speak, he had the opportunity to go to the flight line where a static display of aircraft had been prepared just for him.  Mr. Zamperini was given the opportunity to get up close and personal with the B-2 Spirit, and F-35 Lightning II as well as the F-22 Raptor.

"This is the first time I've been to Edwards. It's a place I've always wanted to visit. The people were fantastic and it was an amazing opportunity to see all the airplanes. This day was a special gift, a dream come true," he said about the experience.

That day, Mr Zamperini inspired my husband and my husband, who maintains the F-22 in this picture, was honored to give back just a small bit in return.

Mr. Zamperini’s light will indeed be missed but thankfully the combination of Unbroken and the Legacy of Faith Edition DVD set from FishFlix will insure that his light will not be hid under a bushel or forgotten for the generations to come. .
