VeggieTales have been a huge part of our household for many many years. My oldest daughter, who is now 17, cut her teeth on Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber and Junior Asparagus back in the days of "Madame Blueberry" , "Rack, Shack and Benny" and "Esther..The Girl Who Became Queen". Years later, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything", "Goodnight Junior" and "Where Have All the Staplers Gone" among many other Silly Songs can regularly be heard from one of my kiddos randomly singing. VeggieTales has a timeless feel to it, enjoyed my children of all ages both 18 years ago and today. So when we were given the opportunity to review "VeggieTales Everyday With God: 365 Daily Devo for Girls", I knew it would be something that Ashleigh would cherish and was thrilled to be able to get my hands on it. She watches as I do my own devotional each morning before I start teaching school and I loved the idea of being able to share some of that devotional time with her (and Garrett) and start developing a new habit for them.
This devotional has perfectly fit that role as both of the smaller kids and myself start each morning with the VeggieTales characters as they learn about important topics such as saying your sorry, serving the Lord, and honoring God. Consisting of 365 short devotionals, one for each day of the year, along with several pages of important verses from the Bible perfect for memory work, this book is perfect for any young girl. While the illustrations (all in full color featuring various VeggieTale characters) focus more to the interest of young girls (there is a version available geared for boys), the lessons can be shared with both girls and boys at the same time, something I really like. This particular Devotional is targeted for ages 4-7 but my 8 and 10 year old children enjoyed it very much and found the reading perfect for them.
The text itself is easy to read for younger readers. Each page starts with a heading that details what lesson will be learned in that days devotional, followed by scripture that helps to illustrate that lesson with Biblical teaching. A short couple of paragraphs are then used to teach the lesson in such a way that younger children can understand. A "Thought of the Day" then follows, asking the child to work on a particular goal, such as making someone's day better or remembering that "God made you special and he loves you very much". Finally, a very short child friendly prayed is offered in closing.
I really like that the days in this book are not dated, allowing to just "jump in" regardless of where in the calendar year you might be. This makes this devotional a perfect gift for a birthday, a filler for an Easter basket or a "just because" gift. I also love that the content is not "babyfied" or too "girlie" so that both of my children can enjoy the content without feeling it's geared towards one or the other.
