Wordless Wednesday

THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION FLYOVER

After checking Stellarium on our computer for the exact time and position of where it would fly over, we got some great photos of the International Space Station flying over our heads.  The kids had such a great time watching it as it made it's way across the sky.   It took a good 3 minutes from when we first spotted it until it finally faded out of view.

From Behind The Bars - A Letter From a Pedophile (Part 2)

This is part 2 of the letter I received from my father who is currently incarcerated for being a pedophile.  If you missed part one of this letter, it can be found here.

Again, I am publishing this because I feel it gives much insight into the mind of a child molester.  The justifications, the excuses and the thought process that occurs within them.

PART TWO

What constitutes the manner in how to evaluate an idea or action is a learned reflex. From birth, our minds have been continuously collecting, sorting and filing data. When faced with a situation, the brain sifts through those files and arrives at a judgement base solely on the experience of your personal life.  Once when I was a pre-teen, my mother had me try some liver. It tasted like crap and that bit of information was filed and remained ready for analysis and decision. To this date, I have never eaten liver again.

Sometimes we need not even have a firsthand knowledge of a matter, in order to render judgement. These are the concepts that have been spoonfed to us by parents, teachers, clergy, peers and society in general. "Look both ways before crossing a street."  We do it automatically because it was drummed into our heads as children.   There are scholars who believe that few humans are capable of producing an "original thought". That everything we think is just a regurgitation of others teachings.

Let us do a quick recap before moving into darker areas:
1. This body we are living in is not God made. Your mommy and daddy copulated and that joining created your earthly body.
2. Your soul dwells inside this body and is basically just along for the experience of being human.
3.  At death, the body will rot and turn to dirt, while the soul returns to the Creator.
4.  We inherit traits, characteristics and good and bad genes from long dead ancestors.
5.  One does not become an alcoholic, drug addict, pedophile, or any other undesirable trait. You are born with the gene. It's just the luck of the draw as to if the condition activates.
6.  Most of us grow to become somewhat copies of our parents, as far as our religious beliefs and how we view most of the world.
7.  Passing judgement on others is wrong.  Remember "One needs to walk a mile in another's shoes" before we can have any idea of what's going on in that person's life and why they may behave this way or that way.

I have no written on this, but i would be neglectful of my duties as your host if I didn't mention this very important fact.  Nothing happens that god does not allow to happen. There is no good or bad, left or right, or sin in the eyes of God.  There is only the experience.  Man punishes, God Loves.  This is an important concept and surely a thorn in the ass of many of the world's religions.

I am going to leave alone the poor alcoholics, the stressed out druggies, the broke gamblers and all the other folks who find it impossible to cope with life without their vice.  Being that this is my creation and my vice is pedophilia, it makes sense for me to write on what I know.  This is a bit nerve wrecking as the subject is high voltage taboo.  Several times I have tried to write this and it turned to more like porn than much else.  It is hard to write on a sexual matter like this.  To me it is natural. To others it is a big problem.  Be warned that from this point on, things could get way out in left field.  Reader Beware!  Now what I don't want to do is lose my reader because of the wording of a sentence. When writing on a subject that brings one pleasure, it's easy to get lost in the memories and the wanting to share the experience.

Let's suppose that your in the mood to buy a new car.  So you go out and look around on the lots.  Maybe you go right by 1000 cars without paying them any attention.  Then, one will catch your eye.  Why that one?  The color, body style, size.  Like most of the things we purchase in life, we don't really know why.  You just like that one car, or suit, or even a house. What is so wrong with the first thousand autos you passed up?

Think back to the time when you first met the love of your life.  More than likely, you didn't have to spend time falling in love.  There was something about that person that made them stand out ahead of all others.  My wife is my greatest gift from God.  If you asked me just what it is about her that I love so much, I would have a hard time picking one or two things.  I can't say its this or that.  It's the whole package. I don't know what it is, I just know that she is my love.

Whats all this got to do with this story of mine?  well, quite a lot really.

Why would a grown man see a ten year old girl and see her as a sexually attractive person? I don't know why, but often I do.  I didn't teach myself to view young girls in a sexual manner.  You either do or you don't.  Believe me, my life would have been a million times more simpler if this was not the case.  In the past, when I was going through my Christian era, I begged God to take this curse.  The response I finally learned was to "Deal With It."

I tried so very hard to do just that.  My thinking was if I just ignore the thoughts and desires, they will in time go away.  Not a chance!  It's like trying to change my eye color of blue to green just by not accepting the blue.  So, the solution was not going to be ridding myself of the mental stigma but rather to learn to live with it.  Sounds good but not exactly like learning to live with a wart on my ass.

The human brain is an extremely complicated organ.  Self preservation is always the main priority.  What that means to me is that I have found ways to feel good about me.  So what if I like little girls in a sexual way.  It's not like I am out of control and would drag little Suzie into the bushes.  Do you jump behind the wheel of every car you see and like and take it for a spin?  Of course not.  Not all pedophiles are rapists.  I can admire a new Corvette going down the road just as I can admire a pretty little girl at the mall.

well, if i am so damn smart, why am I rotting away in a prison cell?  Okay, that's a good question.  the answer is that I have not always been so smart.  Prison, if nothing else, is a place for pondering.  In nearly twelve years, I have surely had ample time to ponder many things.  Why I am like this and what do I do next with it.  Again, just give me time and I will get back to these quandaries.

This may be a good time to toss in a very brief bio on my childhood.  When I was of the age of 6-7-8 maybe 9, I had two passions.  One was to rid the neighborhood of renegade Indians.  the other was to study the female anatomy.  I had two female cousins that lived two houses down.  Messing with them was alot more fun than shooting Indians.  All was well for Dr Bryan, who specialized in pelvic exams.  Then at about 9, both girls found God at the Pentecost Church.  That put an abrupt halt to my medical practice.

Nothing worth making any special note happened as I attended Jr High and High School.  I dropped out in the 10th grade and joined the Marines.  This was in 1967 and Vietnam was going strong. See, I told you I was not very smart.  In 1969 I was sent to the hot jungles of that awful country.  The main point I wish to make is that I was now 20 years old and never had sexual thoughts about little girls.  It was not until I had returned to the States and a couple of years had passed that I began to see them in a different light.  I am not blaming Vietnam, only saying that the war was the most traumatic event of my life and the scars do run deep. I don't know if PTSD could have cause pedophilia but I am sure it didn't help.

Allow me to interject something here.  At no time am I looking for anything or anyone to cast blame on.  I am one hundred percent responsible for me and my actions.  So as you read and it may seem like I am shifting blame to another, I am not.  I used the word "Blame" but as I have already stated, blame is a man made word and holds no court in God's cosmos.  It is what it is. Nothing more.

Okay, so this really follows no particular pattern.  I just write what I feel like writing.  If I jump around from one day to the next, I only hope it is easily followed.

Let me write for a while on the Bible.  I have no intent on putting down anyone's beliefs so don't feel as if I am.  People are normally right where they are suppose to be.  Enlightenment does not come from the reading of dogma or the attending of a building where like minded folks gather.  The channel between your soul and the Creator are always open.  The problem is getting your flash and blood body to get involved.  this is an inner trip and not an easy trek. Talking to God is easy.  You need only to think.  Hearing God is the hard part for it means we have to shut up, clear our minds of all the mental traffic and then just listen.  Sounds fine until you get to that part about stopping the brain from doing what it does best - thinking.

Oh yeah, I was writing about the Bible.  Well, many believe it's God's Word to the world. Well, if you are a Christian.  There are plenty of other religions on this planet who have their own Holy Book.
Okay, "In the Beginning" there was no paper, pencils, papyrus, much less a language.  The story has it that God took a bunch of dirt, formed a man and gave it life.  Now this "Man" and later his "Woman" are responsible for populating the planet.  Well, until the flood, which killed everything except for Noah, his family and all those animals.  Then it was up to that clan to get busy and start us off again.  Well, they did a good job, as this planet went from those eight or so folks to almost eight billion at last count.  You buy that?  How about the dude Jonah getting swallowed by a big fish, living in there for three days and then getting puked up on a beach unharmed?

Scholars are unsure of just how far back in the Earth's history all this was suppose to have been going on.  Some say 4000 BC. Some 10,000 BC.  Well, let me see here.  God formed the Heavens and the Earth and began life with Adam and Eve.  Noah and his crew came along later.  If Adam was God's first living creation on the planet Earth, what about those nasty creatures called dinosaurs?  They roamed around some 260 million years ago.

I could just keep going, but I am not wanting to be an ass.  I just wanted to give the readers a small idea of why I moved away from the teachings of the Bible.  The biggest problem I have with most mainstream religion is the idea that God says "Don't screw up or I will burn your dead ass up in the fires of hell".  What kind of father would put a candy bar in front of a child then tell him to resist eating it.  Let me answer that. An Asshole.  The God that loves me, does not play such silly games with me.  Bryan has done a lot of screwing up in his 65 years.  All the flaws that are part of what makes me, me, will die and rot away.  The real "me", my soul, will return to the creator, pedophile and all, but surely a bit wiser.

It may seem I have drifted far off topic. However, how I think and feel about life, love and God are of most important.  I have a fondness of writing and a part of me would like to leave something behind that others can read and, just maybe gain a little deeper understanding of who I am.  Like everyone else on the planet, I am not just this or that.

The Author

From Behind the Bars - A letter From a Pedophile (Part 1)

As a few of you might know, I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. My abuser was my father and my life of abuse started at a very early age - in early infancy.   I had a very short reprieve from this when my mother left my father when I was 10 months old and moved to New York with me. However, when I was 6 my father was awarded custody of me and I moved with him and his wife, my stepmother, back to Texas.

For 11 years I was again the object of his abuse and endured it until, two months shy of my 17th birthday, my father tried to commit suicide. In a complete turn of events, I was the one who found him and without hesitation, performed life saving on him and called for help, essentially saving his life.  However, when the police arrived and found his suicide note, the years of abuse were revealed and came to light.

Currently, my father is serving time in a prison in Texas for what he did to me.   For many years I did not have any contact with my father but about 7 years ago I opened lines of communication through letters as a way of healing.  This is the only contact that I allow with him, especially since I have two daughters of my own whom I would never put in harms way.

Recently, my father wrote a letter not exactly intended for me personally but for a general audience explaining a bit of his thinking.  While I normally would not share something like this, I do find it to have some value for parents of children in regards to what the mind of a predator who might be around the corner is like.   This letter is incompletely and luckily is not graphic (although he does hint that it might have gone that way if it had been completed).   Even incomplete, this letter was 25 pages long so to keep this posting from being even more overwhelming then it will be, I shall break this up into two postings, as I received the letter in two mailings.

I would like to point out some of the justifications he makes for his behavior, that God made him this way, as it sounds much like the current argument for other populations in the news currently. While I am not saying that that population are child molesters, I worry that this argument will again one day be used to change laws to make this type of behavior legal since pedophiles claim they were "born this way" and have no control.

My father is a very intelligent man. When I was growing up he held a job driving a truck, he went to church on Sunday and he was well liked by the neighbors. He was as normal as anyone else on the exterior.

The truth, however, it a completely different story.

The Letter

The following is not for the faint of heart. It's hopefully going to be a trip into the brain of me, your host for this possibly short or maybe extensive excursion to places you may have never dreamed of, or maybe you did, and it scared the hell out of you.

No one wakes up in the morning and says to themselves, "Starting today, I am going to become an Alcoholic, or maybe a drug addict , or a pedophile." WHOA!! What in the hell did I just write? A pedophile? I'll wait while you grab a dictionary and look it up. Yup, that's the word. An adult who gets sexual gratification from children. Yeah, I know. You can see yourself in a gutter puking drunk, or a person who would steal that last ten dollars from your mother's purse in order to get that "high". However, having sex with kids is way too far out there.

Well, sadly enough, there are plenty of drunks, drug addicts and yes, those nasty pedophiles. Here is a real kick in the ass. We can all normally pick out the person who has a drinking problem, and the one who has the monkey on his back is pretty easy to spot. So, how do you point out the guy who likes to mess around with the youngsters? No, he is not standing by the school yard fence in a raincoat on a sunny day. He is next door to your house. He is sitting close to you at work or even in church. He is a doctor, a lawyer, a US Senator and the school bus driver. He is your father, grand father, uncle, brother and best friend.

Well, don't that just beat all.

How in the world did these guys get in this mess? Were they molested themselves as children? Some surely were and some were not. Being the receiver of Uncle Buds lust when you were six does not guarantee that you yourself will grow to adulthood and when the moon is full, crave the affections of Little Johnnie or Suzy. So, how does this poor soul become such a loathed creature? As mentioned at the onset, no one would choose to be a pedophile. We don't pick our eye or hair color. What ever they are, it's there. Wearing tinted contacts or coloring your hair is just a cover up. What lies under all the mask we wear is who and what we are.

There were times in my life when I would drink alcohol and think to myself that it's so much fun to be drunk, that I will get drunk everyday. When waking the next morning, a drink of booze was the last thing I wanted. I don't have the gene of being an alcoholic. I swore off drinking many years ago and have never missed it. A person who is an alcoholic may not drink, but he wants to. The same with those who have a drug addiction.  They are just one high from being right back to being strung out.

Now here is a little something for you to chew on. When the alcoholic or drug addict goes into treatment, they are looked on as fine folks, trying to do the right thing. Let the pedophile go and try to find help and he will probably wind up in jail.

Well, as I stated, this is going to be my story. If your okay with reading it, that's fine. If not, I don't really care. If anything, I am mostly writing this for me. I am 65 years old and I am beginning this from a cell in a Texas prison. Why I am here is obvious. How I get to this point in my life is the question. Of course, I am just one of the many who have questions, but few answers. I have surely knocked on the proverbial door of knowledge but the door has not opened.  People say "It is what it is so just deal with it. Stop thinking like a fool."

If you were expecting a main stream novel, then your up for a big let down. There are my thoughts, and sometimes my fantasies. Chronological order may help keep things in some follow able sequence but won't always be observed.

It is said that we learn from our mistakes. I believe that to be true, but first we need to recognize and agree to an event being a mistake.  Meaning that if an action performed, registers in your psyche as normal, then no correction is warranted. Because something appears to be grave matter to your way of seeing the world does not mean that everyone views the events in the same way.  If in societal judgement, the acts of an individual are flawed, that does not mean the doer of the deed sees it in the same light. Society, long ago, had said that smoking marijuana was completely unacceptable. However, as we all know, a vast amount of people did not agree and many went to prison. Today, it is legal in many states. What was once evil is today a common place. At no time did the users of weed see anything wrong.

Easy there reader. There are a lot of pages in this composition book and I have plenty of time to bring things into clearer  focus.  remember that this is a free style writing and I need not follow any standard format.  It's not going to say what "you" want it to say. It will only be a reflection of me. It's not of any importance that you agree or disagree. Only read with as open of a mind that your unique personality allows.

A seal can be trained to honk a horn when the correct hand signal is given. A dog can be taught to roll over in the same way. In this same manner, we humans are taught from birth to view things in the same manner as our parents, teachers, clergy and often peers. As an example, what ever religion your family is (was), chances are great that you are.  Pentecost parents raise Pentecost children, Baptist raise Baptist, and a Muslim household will surely rear Muslim children. You were not born to any particular anything. All that you are is the result of a lifetime of teaching and molding. Very seldom does the offspring step away from the family fold.

I think we all can agree on the above point. Now, let us add to the mix  the ancestral DNA that gets dragged along from generation to generation. Each of us have the genetic makeup of ancestors long gone by centuries.  Many of the distinguishing features or characteristics we exhibit are the results of DNA. Along with our eye and hair color, facial features and mannerisms, we have also inherited a lot of negative conditions. A family with a history of illness, such as heart disease, hypertension, Alzheimer's and mental problems are much more inclined towards these afflictions. If your great grandfather was an alcoholic, that same gene is present in you. Does not mean your going to surely have a drinking problem but the threat is always present.

So what does this all mean so far? Well, I think it's safe to say that many of the "choices" we make in life are not rendered as freely as some would want you to believe. In order to make this point more clear, it will be necessary for me to climb up on my soap box and do a little pontification. Don't worry. I promise to get to all the juicy stuff in due time. You can't put a dot on a canvas and call it a painting. trying to elaborate on just the main idea, when there are sixty five years of living to be considered can be tricky.

My mother's side of the family were mostly all church going, God fearing Christians. My dad showed little interest in any organized religion. However, my young life was spent being dragged (and I do mean dragged) to Sunday school and summer Bible school. I never felt comfortable in the church setting and when I was about twelve my Dad told me that if I did not want to go to church, I did not have to. That was the end of that, for a great many years.

This is not about my spiritual awakening, so I will not spend a lot of time on it. I reserve the right to return should I deem it necessary. However, for now I will try and capsulate my ideas on God.  I think that by explaining myself now, you the reader will be better able to consider any dogma that I attempt the theorize.

At this point, let me state unequivocally that I am "NOT" a Christian or a student  of the Bible. I do have a background in such, so I am far from ignorant on the religion. However, I consider myself to be solely a "Spiritualist". I have a firm belief in a higher power. Just not the one talked of in the Bible.  The path to this inner understanding of the Cosmic Deity we call God has been a long trek and continues on today. I am not going to bore you with any details, other than to state that my God loves me unconditionally.

It's important to the story to make it clear that God creates souls; People make people. In this aging body of mine is a soul of God. This body will die and rot but the spirit of who I really am lives on forever. The body needs the spirit to give it life. The spirit only needs this body in order to experience life as a human. The soul or spirit is just fine without the body. When this body dies, I will return to the Creator. The actions of the body have no bearing on the Godliness of my soul. If you prefer to believe in a God that would cast his Creation into some fiery Hell, go right on ahead. The body is responsibly for its transgressions on Earth. The spirit that lives within each of us is just along for the ride. For the experience of being human.

Okay, so now you have an idea of where I stand on the God thing.  I have my own relationship with the Creator and do not need a building or a congregation in order to be with and talk to God. Just as Jesus was the Son of God, I , you and all of us are as well.

So what's the purpose of a spirit entering a body? Ever heard of the old expression "Don't judge until you have walked a mile in my shoes?" Sure you have. We as humans are very quick to judge and cast blame. A soul has a purpose. To become more like the Creator. Because the afterlife does not offer the challenges of being human, souls experience the vast array of possible characters and situations by hiking a ride with the body.  I don't know what it's like to be an alcoholic or a drug addict, so who am I to make judgement. You probably don't have a clue as to how it feels to be a pedophile yet people are so quick to cast those stones.

After over a decade behind bars, I have learned to not be so fast to characterize another, if at all. I can sit and have lunch with a man who killed, dismembered and ate his mother and not feel disgust. I have not a clue what it's like to be him and what drove him to do that. Then again, he probably does not know either. Something in the genes. Not all of us came from the bloodline of
Mother Teresa. Look at it this way. People make people. God makes (creates) souls. If you kill a human, all you have really done is released the soul to return to God. Man's law will punish you but the Creator only deals with the perfection of his creation - the soul - and the soul is incorruptible.

What's In Our Ipsy Bags? (June)

It's the middle of June and it's time for another installment of What's In Our Ipsy Bags.

For those who are new, just a quick explanation. Ispy is a mail order subscription service. Each month, for 10.95, they ship out a makeup bag filled with 5 products ranging from lipsticks, eyeliners, facial cleaners and even makeup brushes. One or two are usually full sized products while the rest are typically trial sized.  It's a fun way to try new makeup brands, experiment with new colors

My daughter and I started receiving the IPSY bags last month and they were a huge hit in our house. It's been a great way to bond with my oldest and I find the 22 dollars I spend each month (for two bags) well worth it.

Each month the bags have a theme.  This month's these was "Swim Into Beauty".

This theme proved to be really cute as the makeup bag is a really stylish black with a bright coral colored zipper. The material on the front is a nice silky material with the IPSY logo embroidered in raised lettering.  The back of the bag is a very thin Neoprene material and feels like a lightweight wet suit.  The inside of the bag is lined in black and there's plenty of room for all the goodies inside and then some.

Between our two bags, this was our combined haul for the month :)

Alyssa's Bag

First up for Alyssa is the OFRA cosmetics Turquoise Eyeliner.   This color is gorgeous and is very smooth to apply. The metallic coloring gives it a really gives it a nice sparkle. This eyeliner is made with a synthetic beeswax base so its water resistant.

This was Alyssa's favorite item out of her bag.  Lavanila Laboratories The Healthy Body Butter in Pure Vanilla.  I've got to agree with her, this stuff smells like absolute Heaven.  Very silky smooth on the skin. It's made with  pure Shea and Cocoa Butter and scented with Madagascar vanilla and tonka beans.  It's non greasy and contains no paraben, silicone, mineral oils or harsh chemicals.

Next up is Formula X Nail Color in Power Source.  This is a really nice color and Alyssa was kind of disappointed that she didn't get a full size version as this is only a 4ml bottle.  (I tried to tell her it will still last her a long time).  This is a very nice hot coral pink color and will be a perfect color for summer.

Alyssa and I both received the tre'StiQue Shadow Crayon. Alyssa's came in the shade of Kona Coffee which is a classic brown in a cream finish.  These glide on super easy and can be used as all over color on the lid, as a highlighter on the upper lid or in the eye crease as a contour. It's extremely blendable with a smooth finish.

Another item we both received was this Photo Finish Foundation Primer by Smashbox.  It's very lightweight and contains Vitamins A & E, grape seed extract and green tea.  The description says it diffuses the light hitting your face to blur out imperfections and helps make your makeup last all day. We haven't tried this one out just yet but Smashbox is an awesome brand so I'm sure we will be happy with it.

Mom's Bag

First up in my bag is the tre'StiQue eyeshadow crayon. Mine came in the Aspen Pine version and is a really nice deep earthy green with a gold pearl shimmer to it.

It's been hard to decide what my favorite product out of my bag is but it would definitely be a tie between this and the next item. This is the Dr. Brandt® Skincare pores no more® vacuum cleaner.  I've used this twice now since we got it and I can say that it does what it says.  This gentle exfoliating mask helps loosen and extract blackheads without painful extraction tools while absorbing oil and tightening pores. Dr. Brandt’s exclusive formula combines Salicylic and Glycolic Acid to assist in the release of blackheads while Eijitsu Rose helps tighten pores.

This would be the second item that I am in love with. Absolute New York Nail Lacquer in Turquoise.  I put this on two nights ago and it looks just as good as when I put it on. It's a dark turquoise once it dries (it looks much lighter in the bottle). This will be perfect for summer as I'm walking around Disney World in my flip flops. :)

Finally, this is Pure Brazilian Miracle Leave-In Conditioner. I haven't tried this yet but the product description says that this is an ultra-reparative Keratin infused conditioner that re-constructs dry damaged hair by restoring keratin proteins that have been depleted by chronological aging, styling, chemical and environmental damage.

As always,, these bags are so much fun.  If you like what you see, head over to IPSY's site and sign up for one of your own. The products inside are well over the 10 dollars a month subscription fee (the eyeliner alone in Alyssa's bag sells for 13 dollars).

CTC Math (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

Our family is always looking for a new way to teach the kids math.  Let's face it - for the most part math is not fun, at least not for my kids.  Getting them to do math is usually a fight so I am always looking for a math program that is both engaging and fun while still covering the necessary topics for their grade.  We were recently presented with the opportunity to review the 12 Month Family Plan (US Curriculum) for Homeschoolers offered by CTC Math after hearing many good things about their math curriculum, I felt it was worth the opportunity to try with two kids.  I also had a teenager in Algebra who had already failed the class last year and who was in danger of failing for a second year in a row so I had high hopes that this math program would not only engage my two youngest but also help my oldest pass Algebra 1 once and for all.

CTC Math is an online maths curriculum that covers all math concepts, from Kindergarten all the way to higher level mathematics such as Trigonometry and Calculus. These math concepts are not aligned with common core as CTC believes in teaching math the traditional way.  Each student has access to all grades of math as part of the subscription and can easily switch between the various levels with little trouble. This proves to be very useful for older high school students who might be learning concepts that are both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 during the same year. You can also easily jump students from grade to grade rather than having to buy a separate grade level for more advanced lessons.
All Levels of Math Available to Each Student

The program is completely browser based and requires no computer instillation. I ran it both on Chrome and Firefox without any problems or glitches.  I was also able to log into the program with my Kindle Fire without any problems and CTC's website says it should run on all HTML5 platforms such as Ipads, Iphones and Android devices.

In all grades, students are presented with a video lecture that shows the concept for that particular lesson. These videos are very short, on average less than 5 minutes. Examples are given along with very detailed breakdown of the answers. In lower grades, the lesson is followed by a series of questions (around 10 to 12 questions) that reinforces what they just learned.  Extra questions are provided as an option if the child did not do well on the initial questions and might need extra review. Feedback is immediate as the answer will be marked right or wrong and the correct answer is given. After all questions are complete, a printable copy of the questions along with the child's answers is provided which can be printed out for record keeping (something I think is great).

In higher grades, after the video lecture, the student is provided with a worksheet that they can print out and work offline. Once completed, they can record their answers in the website and have their answers graded. By default, the student must score a certain percentage in order to obtain a passing grade on these worksheets or they are told to try again. This percentage can be changed by the parent if you feel it is too low (I changed it to 90 percent on my oldest daughter's account).

Students are rewarded with certificates after they complete each unit. There are levels for these certificates are Platinum, Gold and Silver based on their average grade from all tasks in each set of lessons. Platinum is awarded when a student gets 100% for the entire set.

Another fun thing for kids is the speed drills. My oldest had alot of fun doing these drills and they made for a great breather as she was studying harder math concepts. Focusing on Addition and Subtraction skills, the student must answer as many questions as they can in one minute.  There were a few times I caught Alyssa doing these drills even after her study time was over as she kept trying to beat her previous score.

One of the many pluses to CTC Math is that tracking your child's progress is very easy. CTC sends progress reports to the parents email on a weekly basis letting you know how many times the student logged in, for how long, what they did while they were logged in and how they did on what they worked on, This same information can also be accessed from the Parent account which gives quick access to all students currently enrolled in the program.

Parent's Login Screen Provides Statistics on all Students

CTC Math can be used as both a full math program for grades K-6 as well as a supplemental program for upper grades.  Because of this, I approached this review from two different angles.  First, I would have my 10th grader use it as a tutoring program to hopefully help her pass her final exam in her public school. Second, I would use it to first review and then teach my two homeschool students the skills they need to move on to 2nd grade math.   Because of this, this is essentially two reviews in one.

My Experiences in Our Homeschooling

Ashleigh and Garrett are the complete opposites when it comes to school. Ashleigh loves reading and writing and being read to.  Garrett absolutely hates it and it's only been recently that he's started to write when asked.  However, Garrett is a math fiend, he absolutely loves it. Ashleigh, on the other hand, loathes math. We have had many issues with Ashleigh holding Garrett back when it comes to Math because she will cry, whine and be very uncooperative when it comes time for math lessons.

However, the fact that each lesson with CTC Math is very short and to the point, broken down in such a way they can easily understand along with graphics for explanations, Ashleigh seemed to be able to sit and pay attention much easier.  Each afternoon, I would have them independently sit with me, cuddled up on the couch with my computer and we would work on the lessons together, while the other did an independent lesson.  Together we would watch the lesson, pausing it while they would work out the problem and then we would follow up with the questions.  This worked really well with both kids. It proved to be especially useful with Ashleigh who thought it more of bonding time with Mom rather than a math lesson.  There have been a few times that I have told them it was time for math that Ashleigh has specifically made sure we were going to do CTC Math rather than another math program.

Being as that both kids tend to be visual learnings, this program was excellent for them. The speaking instruction is very clear and understandable (lessons are taught by Australian math teacher Patrick Murray) and the accompanying graphics really demonstrated the point to them.

They both absolutely love earning certificates, although it has become a bit of a competition to see who gets platinum and who gets gold.

I really enjoyed the fact there were both comprehensive and standard tests that can be used to test how well they mastered each skill that they were learning.  I also found these tests to be very helpful when trying to determine how much the kids already knew in the sets and what we could skim over and what we really needed to concentrate on.

The kids liked that there was a counter/slider at the top of each test that allowed them to know how many more problems they had before they were done and they would count down to completion.

Alyssa's Experience with CTC Math

Alyssa has struggled with Algebra. As said above, she had already failed this class her 9th grade year and was in danger of failing again her 10th grade year. Alyssa routinely brought home test grades in the 30's in her class. Part of the problem was the lack of understanding of Algebraic formulas; the other part of the problem was a teacher who failed explain these formulas and did not make time for students who failed to understand them (she had the same teacher both years).  Basically, her class was a sink or swim situation.   Going into her final semester, she has D- for the 3rd quarter and at progress reports in the 4th quarter she had F. She had exactly three weeks to use CTC math as much as she could in the hopes to score high enough of her final exam and hopefully pull out a passing grade for the 4th quarter.  We were at dire straights with her, there were lots of tears and plenty of "I Just don't care anymore". This math class was really driving a wedge between us as the frustration built.

Alyssa started using CTC Math 3 weeks before the end of the school year.  Each day I had her come home, do her normal homework, using the CTC lessons to help her understand that days classwork. then spend an hour on the program reviewing concepts that she did not understand through the year.  She would watch the lesson, I would print out the worksheets that accompanied the lesson and she would practice the concepts covered in the lesson.  Then she took her first test since starting CTC Math.  She scored a B after using the program for a week. This was a HUGE improvement over the EXTREMELY low F (32%) she had scored the test prior. She said even her teacher mentioned the improvement and she mentioned that she was using CTC to help study and review.

Her second and third weeks with CTC, she used it to help prepare for her Final exam for the year.  There were many concepts she did not understand from her class and she worked hard to try to cram as much as she could.  She knew she needed to get at least a C- on the exam to pass for the year, which for her as a HUGE goal considering her past testing grades.   She took her exam and she came home saying she felt okay about it.

Today I received her report card.  We held our collective breath as we tore off the perforated edges off the mailer and opened that final piece of paper.  She scored a mid C on her exam.  She had passed with a high enough D for the semester that with her C from the first semester, she squeaked by with a 70% for the year.  ALGEBRA WAS HISTORY!!

I have no doubt whatsoever that CTC Math was the only reason she passed this class.  It proved to be an extremely valuable tool to her, explaining the math concepts she was struggling with in such a way that they finally clicked with her.  Without this program, I believe that Alyssa would be repeating the 10th grade because of her Algebra class. Now, instead, she will be moving on to the 11th grade and to Geometry. I have no doubt that if she had had this program earlier on in the school year, we would not have been worried of her failing in the first place.  It is a relief to me as a mother to know that even if she has the same dreaded teacher next year, she will have CTC Math from the very start of the year to help her through it.

Final Thoughts

I never did well in math which really hindered me when it came to sciences because I was scared to take chemistry and physics because of my lack of mathematical knowledge.  I really do not want the same down the road for my kids and so I am very grateful that there are programs out there that can teach the higher math concepts to them when I cannot. (Although, to be honest, with 10 student slots, there's absolutely no reason I cannot learn as well).  CTC Math does a wonderful job of explaining these concepts in a very clear, concise manner that is very quick and to the point, allowing the student to learn that concept and practice that concept until they are efficient in it.

In the past 2 years we've tried other programs trying to help my daughter with her Algebra; Dummy Books, Idiot Books, and other online math programs. With each we tried we failed to see any marked improvements in her grades.  It wasn't until we tried CTC Math that things started to click for her and she managed to pass the class.

All three of my kids really seem to like this curriculum and I am very happy with it as well. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a math curriculum for K-6 and as a supplement tutoring program for higher levels in addition to a selected curriculum.  I would also HIGHLY recommend CTC Math if you have a student in public schools struggling with math and who needs extra support.

CTC Math offers a 60% discount of their normal pricing for homeschool families which allows for full access to all grades and lessons. Single Student pricing start at just $11.97/month and family plans for 2 or more students costs $15.97 a month.  The overall price is discounted even further when purchasing 6 months or a year. The family plan is $118.90 for a full year, coming out to less than 10 dollars a month and a savings of more than 178 dollars.  They also offer a free trial to "try it before you buy it".

What's For Dinner - 6/14

Last week we tried the Whole 30 style of eating and I have to report, it went very well for everyone.. We had one recipe that nobody cared for and so I ended up ordering pizza on Wednesday but outside of that, everyone was very happy with the foods on the plate.   Cracklin' Chicken and Chicken Zucchini poppers were the biggest hits and I have been told those along with the green beans are a must return.  LOL

This week we will be switching it up. While we would like to continue with the Whole 30, we had already planned on basically having an "International Week" leading up to our Disney Trip. So for this week and part of next week, we will be trying authentic recipes from some of the countries we will see in the World Showcase at Epcot.   Next week we will visit China, Japan and hopefully Norway although we may substitute Australia instead..
