Live On Forever - The Afters (Review and Giveaway)

I have always had a love of music.. Even in my teen years, I could be found with my favorite songs blaring, singing along and really "feeling" the song.  Music and lyrics got me through some of my most difficult times in my life and helped me realize that at least someone else knew what I was going through as they wrote songs that reverberated my feelings so well.

Some things have changed.  No longer do I listen to the same type of music that I did back then. Madonna and Van Halen have become a thing of the past for me. However, I am still drawn to music. Especially music that touches my soul with lyrics I can relate to. I tend to listen to music that touches my heart.  More often than not, that music is spiritual and faith based.  And I am always on the look out for new artists to add to my playlist.

I was recently asked to give my opinion of the CD "Live on Forever" by The Afters.
I was completely
unfamiliar with this band prior to popping the CD in my player.  The band is made of up of four members - Matt Fuqua, Josh Havens, Jordan Mohiowski and Dan Ostebo who together produce a fresh Pop sound while still holding true to Christian values with their music that proves to be both inspirational and motivational.  All four members have had hardships and challenges in their lives that tested them and these challenges transfer through their music to send a message of encouragement and love.

Track List:
1. Shadows
2. Battles
3. Sunrise
4. Time of My Life
5. Wake Up My Heart
6. Live on Forever
7. Eyes of a Believer
8. Survivors
9. Legends
10 When You're With Me

My Opinion:

Without any doubt, the first song on this CD is my favorite.  The lyrics to Shadows really drove home with me, comparing the feeling of being a stone statue and having the concrete break away and suddenly feeling yourself brought to life as one rises out from the shadows.  I know this feeling and so the lyrics really reverberated with me.

The same can be true about the title track Live on Forever. Sounding like something straight off a current Top 40 playlist, the rhythm is catchy and the lyrics are amazing.  Alyssa found this song to be her favorite and the message that we're destined for a place so much better than where we are now is made clear.

Finally, the other standout for me was Survivors.  Survivors is the battle hymn for anyone of faith - you can be pushed down, you can be knocked down but you can never be broken.  We as Christians will always get back up and will continue to fight against those forces that set out to destroy us and we will come back fighting even stronger than before until the final days.

The Giveaway:

The other 7 songs on this album are equally encouraging and uplifting, some upbeat and others slower but all with the same message - God is with us even when times are tough.  This is a great album and The Afters have quickly made it to a list of Christian favorites for me and my family. And the best news?? One of my lucky readers of my blog will win a copy of Live On Forever for their own CD library!!!

CHSH-Teach.com Subscription (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

homeschool, education, teach, curriculum. worksheets, lapbooking, notebooking

I love using handouts for homeschooling, but I am one of those who can not make them myself.  In the past, I've used pay per handout style sheets, searching in the hopes that someone else has made a handout similar to what I am looking for and compromising when they weren't.  I also had a free membership to the website CHSH-Teach.com (Christian HomeSchool Hub) and had used some of their free resources in the past so when I was given the opportunity to review the annual subscription to the CHSH Download Club, I knew it was a subscription that I would be able to use often with my family.

homeschool, education, teach, curriculum. worksheets, lapbooking, notebooking
CHSH-Teach.com was started by Lynda Ackert, a mother and public school teacher both in Public Schools and overseas for the Department of Defense for over 20 years.  After becoming a mother, Mrs Ackert made the choice to homeschool her children which led to her realizing that she enjoyed making printables and handouts and wanted to share this with other homeschool families.  Thus, the Christian HomeSchool Hub was created.

With well over 50,000 pages of printable educational material for grades K-12, the Christian
HomeSchool Hub offers a wide arrange of subject material, from core classes such as Math, Language Arts and Sciences on through Bible studies as well as electives such as Foreign Language and Physical Education.  Materials are arranged in such a way that makes searching by subject, grade and month easy.  There's also a search bar that allows the option to search by topic, category or key words to quickly find what you are looking for.

The Christian Homeschool Hub is more than just a download site, however.  Members have the option of contributing their own materials. From flashcards, full scans of out of print books, lapbooks, notebooking pages and planners, members are able to upload their own creations to share with other members.  There's also a forum for members to share information among each other.

How We Used CHSH-Teach.com

Daily Geography Worksheets
Navigating through the offerings at CHSH-Teach.com can be equivelent to a kid in the candy store. There is so many wonderful selections.  The first few days of access, I spent time browsing the various subjects and downloading things that I knew I could use with my 3rd graders.

The first item that really caught my eye was the Daily Geography Curriculum for 3rd-5th Grade. Consisting of 157 pages, this 36 week Geography curriculum consists of mapwork and activities that teach children valuable skills such as recognizing time zones, longitudinal and latitudinal lines, and reading various types of maps.  Each day, students review the lesson and then answer a few questions about what they are learning.  This geography curriculum was easily introduced in addition to our Charlotte Mason style geography lessons.

We also elected to begin the Character Study curriculum.  This curriculum focuses on a character trait each week, suggesting books to read that demonstrate the trait and have students explain how the characters in the book show each trait.  There are 40 lessons ranging from traits such as Greedy, Impatient, Compassionate, Tolerance and Stubborn.

Book Units were another focus that we decided to work with and we enjoyed these very much.  CHSH-Teach.com offers various Book Units for different grade levels.  So far we've done the units for Where the Wild Things Are and Jumanji.  The book units ask questions in regards to what the students have read and then ask them to interpret the story in their own words (and also with pictures).  For our grade level, the studies were only a few pages and were not overwhelming for them to complete.  The books are popular selections, which I was very grateful for since our library on base has a rather limited selection.

Since my kids are very hesitant writers, I opted for one of the handwriting options. The Read It, Write It, Draw It selections were perfect for this.  These selections include copy work about the life cycle of butterflies, ladybugs, frogs and from seed to flowers.  We were easily able to complete one of these books each week.

Many of the items we've been using these last few weeks are items that I plan to keep using throughout the school year, such as the Daily Geography, Character Studies and Book Units.  In addition to these, there are so many things that I cannot wait to incorporate into our year.  Just last week, the website added Monthly Learning Packs for K-2nd Grade, with plans to add more grades shortly.  As these types of packs are something I tend to buy from another website for about 10 bucks a month, I cannot wait to start using these with my kids next week.  Also, there's a wonderful curriculum to teach basic facts about the 50 States that I plan on starting next week as well as a full California State curriculum that I hope to incorporate later in the year.  Needless to say, I already have a file folder on my computer chocked full of things that I hope to do with the kids in the next 40 weeks.

CHSH-Teach.com is a wonderful resource and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to use it with my children. While a free membership is available that allows for limited access to the website, an annual membership that gives full access to everything the Download Club offers is reasonable priced at only $25 per year.  A lifetime membership is also available for $99.

The Birds (Wordless Wednesday)

Wordless Wednesday, Counting Pinecones

Sometimes it feels like something straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie around here in the desert.  Especially when these guys are roosting in trees at night and you startle them and they start screaming and fluttering everywhere.

Exploring Creation with Astronomy (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

We are an astronomy family.  Stargazing and learning about what is outside of our own little world in this universe is something that is a major family affair.  I've mentioned before, my living room is a jungle of telescopes and other astrophotography equipment and many of our friends are people that we have met through amateur astrophotography groups.  We had originally bought the 1st Edition of the  Exploring Creation with Astronomy book and notebooks but unfortunately, the notebook had an unfortunate meeting with a cup of red Kool-aid and we were unable to finish our studies with it.   When we were given the opportunity to review the brand new Exploring Creation with Astronomy, 2nd Edition from Apologia Educational Ministries,  I knew our family had to be on it.

For this review, Apologia was extremely generous and provided members of the crew with not only a copy of the 2nd Edition of Exploring Creation with Astronomy but also with copies of the recently updated 2nd Edition Astronomy Notebooking Journal (for students grade 3rd/4th through 6th grade)and the 2nd Edition Astronomy Jr Notebooking Journal (designed for students K-3rd grade, depending on their writing level).  Icing on the cake was the inclusion of the 2nd Edition Exploring Creation with Astronomy Audio CD.

About Apologia  and Exploring Creation with Astronomy

Apologia is a company that almost every homeschooling family has come to know and trust. The number 1 publisher of Creation-based science and Biblical curriculum, Apologia caters to grades K-12.  Their offerings range from their "Exploring Creation" Science series, various Bible and Worldview selections, language art options, High School Geography and Civics curriculum and even planner and devotionals for the homeschool mom.

Revised and updated earlier this year, the Exploring Creation with Astronomy 2nd Edition takes the award winning textbook by Jeannie Fulbright and makes it even better.  Twelve years after the original, Jeannie Fulbright has partnered with NASA engineer Damian Ludwiczak to invite a new generation of students grades K-6th to once again explore the outer reaches of God's creation. Broken down into 14 Lessons, the book explores astronomy starting with the sun and working it's way outward as it goes into great depths about our planets, the Kuiper Belt and dwarf planet and ends with space exploration and whats beyond our own solar system. Included in each lesson are various activities designed to help students understand what they are learning.

Gone with the first generation are the small, low resolution photographs and graphics which have now been replaced with  large eye catching graphics that provide a much better visual explanation than the previous version.  The graphic to the left is a lesson in regards to the tilt of the Earth and how it influences the seasons as seen in both the 1st and 2nd Edition.  While providing the same information, the 2nd Edition's graphics are much more visually appealing.  Also included is now information in regards to advancements made in the last 12 year since the 1st Edition was published. Students can now learn about Curiosity's voyage to Mars, Cassini's mission to Saturn, and Messenger's final images before crashing into Mercury.

The updates Notebooking Journals are also much more visually appealing than the previous edition.
Rather than a majority of basic black and white pages, the new journals are also in full color with graphics of planets, stars and galaxies throughout.  Both the Notebooking Journal as well as the Jr Notebooking Journal include activities and notebooking pages for all 14 lessons - the only true difference between the two as far as I can see is that the Jr Notebooking Journal substitutes coloring pages for many of the more advanced "What Do You Remember" review pages as well as using primary-rules lines to make copy work and other writing activities more friendly for students who are still developing basic writing skills.

The final component of the newly revised edition is the 2nd Edition Audio CD. Perfect for students who are audio learners as well as those who like to hear narration while following along in their text book, this recording includes the complete text of the book read aloud by the author, Jeannie Fulbright.

How We Used It

For this review, I used the book a bit differently than I would typically use a text book.  Rather than starting from the beginning, we started from the back of the book and jumped into Chapter 14 which was about the Stars, Galaxies and Space Travel.  I opted to start with this chapter because we brought our textbook with us while camping for a week in Yosemite National Park and I thought it would be a great way to bring our learning out of the classroom while giving us a PERFECT opportunity to see the sky without light pollution.  We also brought along our small telescope to do a bit of viewing of the objects we were learning about.  Can you think of a better place to learn about God's creation then in one of the most beautiful National parks in our country?

So as the sun went down, the kids and I would gather around on our picnic bench and we would read aloud from our text book.   It was a full family affair as the together we learned about how to find the Big Dipper in the sky and then to use it to find Polaris, the North Star.  We also talked about the International Space Station and had the wonderful opportunity to see it as it passed overhead.

Chinese CZ-7 Rocket breaking up over Yosemite National Park
However, I will say, the book did not prepare us when we saw a really bright light in the sky.  At first,
we thought it was the ISS once again passing over head but as it grew brighter, we could see it breaking apart in the sky.  We knew it was some sort of "space junk" and discussed how old satillites and rocket parts are pulled back to Earth due to gravity, but wasn't til we left the park a few days later and had cell reception that we found out it was the remains of a Chinese rocket reentering the Earth's atmosphere.

Our space exploration didn't stop once we returned home, however.  Many a nights, we took to our dark front yard and looked up at the sky, looking for various constellations in our night sky.  I don't want to know what my neighbors thought as the entire family would stand outside in our driveway or in the street, looking up at the sky. We are very blessed that living in the Mojave desert, we have fairly dark skies for the kids to observe what we were learning about.  Each night, before bedtime, the kids wanted to head outside and look for what we were talking about in the textbook, whether it was finding the Milky Way, the conjunctions of the planets, or just making sure they could still find Polaris.

One of our many Star Gazing Nights
We also had a great time using the extras found on the website (you will need to purchase the text to gain access to these extras).  Using many of these extras led to some really interesting learning.  Probably most memorable was the kids reactions to learning about the "Space Potty".  We also learned a lot about the special exercise requirements astronauts in space have.

We also used the Notebooking Journals along with our lessons.  Originally, I had planned to allow Garrett to use the Jr version but decided since the differences were slight, Ashleigh would enjoy the coloring pages more than Garrett would. (Garrett hates coloring pages!!) Each notebook includes activities such as crossword puzzles, pages to document results of experiments, lapbooking style "matchbooks" and various copy work pages.  I really enjoyed that the copywork pages included in both journals included both print and cursive pages, as the kids are currently learning to write in cursive. These copywork pages are based on scripture and ties Astronomy in with God's creations.  I highly recommend the notebooking journals to accompany the textbook as the activities are well thought out and really help with reviewing the materials being learned.

We absolutely love Apologia.  It's a company that I know I can trust to provide quality educational material without questionable content that goes against my beliefs as a Christian and with the newly updated Exploring Creation with Astronomy, my husband and I can continue to share our love of the Heavens with our kids.

How Would I Spend 1 Million Dollars (52 Lists)

Week #35

List How You Would Spend a Million Dollar Inheritance or Lotto Winning

OOOH man, if only that could really happen so I could prove this would be my list ;)   I think we've all dreamed of having what I call "stupid money", so much money you can pretty much blow thousands of dollars on absolutely nothing and not feel one bit of regret over it..

This week, for the 52 Lists Blog hop, we were asked to list how we would spend a million dollars.

52 lists with Chasing Slow

I would honestly love to say I would donate to this charity or that charity, that I would give to the church, ect.. And I probably would, but lets face it, that's not what you came here to hear, right??  So lets just assume that's part of the equation and instead we will focus on the FUN slurges that would happen afterwards..

  •  A home in Scotland.. Nothing extravagant, not a castle or such, but just a nice modest summer home in the Scottish Highlands that maybe we can even retire to later in life.
  • A Camaro for my husband.. He's been trying to purchase one for 2 years now, I'm tired of hearing about it, so I would buy it.. Done Deal!!
  • A college account for each kid (okay, I have to be somewhat responsible, right??)
  • Major Splurge here - Purchase a Time Share/Vacation Home through Disney's Vacation Homes.  We are MAJOR Disney World fans!!!
  • A new wardrobe for each member of the family. Yesterday I wore a shirt that was 15 years old - it's time to upgrade.. lol
  • Purchase life insurance and burial plots, ect for not only for my family but for both mine and my husband's parents.  (yeah, kinda morbid but none of them have any coverage)
  • NEW furniture!!!  A bed for starters.. I might sleep on a sleep number mattress, but the boxsprings sit on the floor.. LOL
  • A trip back home to Texas.. That way I can share all my favorite eats with my family as well as take them to a PNG Football Game!!!! Then we could head to San Antonio and New Braunfels, floating the river and walking the riverwalk.
  • The rest would go into savings and become "fun" money.. Since we would still have income coming in every two weeks, this money could just grow interest and we could use to have fun anytime we want :)

The Kingdom of Thrim Review

Recent years have seen the growth of Christian fiction, both for adults and children.  This is refreshing for parents, as purchasing a book from this genre often means that there won't be questionable content and will likely have a spiritual lesson to pass on to the reader.  Christian authors have opened up a whole new world of story books set in fictional worlds and settings, allowing children to still enjoy the "fairy tale" type story while still learning about faith and God's love.

Janis Cox joins the ranks of writing and illustrating just such a book with her release of The Kingdom of Thrim.  The Kingdom of Thrim tells the story of Yoj, a talented doll maker who resides in a colorful Kingdom filled with all the beauty God created and who feels joy in all that he does.  When a career decision is placed before him, he soon learns that money can't provide true happiness.  He encounters others who are equally as unhappy as he is and works to find a solution to help everyone embrace their God given gifts and find happiness in the end.

There were various lessons for children to learn from this story such as how failure to make big decisions without first looking for direction from God can often lead to unhappiness. It also illustrates beautifully that God has a path for our lives and when we deviate from that path, we're often left with a void and a feeling of sadness.  I also felt that it shows that even when we do make the wrong decision, God can still use us to accomplish his work.

In addition to the wonderful story, the beautiful watercolor illustrations really help to bring the story to life.  My children really enjoyed looking at the paintings and they do a great job accompanying the story, from the bright colors of Thrim to the dark greyscale of the dreary Shadowland.

Garrett builds a colorful Thrim Building
Also included with the story are various activities for different age groups to accompany the story. From creating cloth dolls, making buildings from blogs, and art projects with watercolors (which I might add is a really neat project), the activities are engaging and allow for conversation with the kids about what we read and how the activities tie in to the story.

This is a wonderful story book to add to your collection and would easily become a family favorite.  And Mrs. Cox has been very generous and is giving one of my lucky readers the opportunity to win a copy of your own (open to residents of the US and Canada).  If you want to guarantee a copy for your library, be sure to visit her website at www.janiscox.com (digital copies available for $2.99 or purchase a signed physical copy for $13 Canadian) or from Amazon.  Also, when you visit her website and sign up for her newsletter, you can get two free books.
